Director: Lidia Duda 2022 Poland 80 minutes All Ages "Perpetually sends arrows to your hearts” (The Guardian) Zosia, Oskar, and Kinga are seven-year-olds who are moving away from their parents for the first time to attend boarding school for the blind and vision-impaired. Lidia Duda’s strategy is simply to keep the camera on the children, nothing more and nothing less—they don’t need to be explained or patronised. As she says, “I believe in small, tiny worlds, because only by changing them, people can change the macro-world.” The result is quite extraordinary. Zosia is relentlessly talkative, Oskar works out his insecurities on the piano, and Kinga is a solid, supportive presence. There is true beauty in this film. “profoundly touching … a breathtaking and deeply affecting documentary. The formative phase in children’s lives is rarely observed with such closeness and grace.” (The Guardian) “a truly extraordinary and well-constructed documentary… There is beauty in simplicity, and Duda accomplishes so much in a relatively short span of time, asserting her vision while finding the space to provide one of the most tender and insightful works of representation in recent years, handcrafting a soft-hearted, deeply meaningful view on disability, and offering a marginalized group a platform to have their voices heard.” (International Cinephile Society)
